In the ten millennia preceding the Indomitus Crusade, the Custodes rarely left the palace they had sworn to guard in organized formations. The Custodes decide who may enter the Emperor's throne room, and when. This is their supreme authority on Terra. These guardians are humanity's mightiest warriors. As the Emperor's chosen, they must excel in all aspects to the utmost.

Although the Custodes originally numbered ten thousand, approximately five years after the War Within the Webway, their ranks had diminished to around a thousand. However, by the 41st Millennium, their strength has been restored to its original ten thousand. Yet what has never changed is that they remain gathered at the foot of the throne of humanity's great Emperor!
